Slime is both yucky and super fun to play with, but there’s a lot of science behind slime that makes it extra cool. Have you ever noticed how slime feels really drippy when you are moving your hands fast but more solid when you are holding it and moving your hands more slowly? How is it possible that slime can be both liquid-y and solid AT THE SAME TIME? Well, slime is a special kind of liquid called a non-Newtonian fluid.
A Non-Newtonian fluid is neither a liquid nor a solid. It can be picked up like a solid, but it also will ooze like a liquid. Slime does not have its own shape. Slime can also change its shape to fill whatever container it’s placed in.
Pull the slime slowly and it flows more freely. If you pull it quickly, the slime will break off more easily because you are breaking apart the chemical bonds.
Slime is all the rage these days. While mess from slime can drive parents mad, slime can be a great creative outlet for kids. They learn to follow recipes, experiment with varying ratios and ingredients, and teach others what they have learnt.
